Choosing lighting for your conservatory can be more complicated than doing so for internal rooms of the home. The different type and slope of ceiling can affect the type of lights used. The glass roof and the reflections off the glazing can all have an effect on amplifying the lighting.
A great joy of having a conservatory is being able to see the stars at night, but having overhead lighting can ruin the pleasure of this. Also the hassle of trying to hide cables to light fittings in a glass ceiling is a real pain. Your conservatory designer or builder would need to find ways of hiding the cable within the beams sustaining the glass roof.
Lights at a lower level are a much better alternative. Lamps and down lighters can be used to highlight specific areas. This will create a much comfier and informal feeling for the room. Most evenings you will also get the glow from the moon and the stars as well.
Just remember to make sure that when planning your conservatory you include plenty of floor or wall sockets to be integrated around the conservatory, you don’t want unsightly trails of leads spoiling your view. Also ask your electrician to establish a circuit ring so that you can control all the lights at once when entering the conservatory, but make sure each lamp is individually controlled so you can adjust the lighting to your mood. Having a couple of lamps with dimmer switches can make this simpler.
If you do decide on ceiling lights then integrate them with conservatory ceiling fans that you can reverse the direction of the blades to draw warm up upwards and out of roof vents in summer and distribute warm rising air during the winter, making the conservatory a more relaxing space to spend time in both in summer and winter. |
